StampMind #45 · Oct 29, 2026

Denmark's first stamp went on sale on 1 April 1851: a square 4 rigsbankskilling in brown with a crown, sword and sceptre inside a wreath and the words KONGELIGT POST FRIMAERKE around the frame. It was designed and first printed by M. W. Ferslew; after his death the printer H. H. Thiele took over and his firm produced Danish stamps for the next 80 years. The 4 RBS paid the national letter rate, and a 2 RBS for Copenhagen local mail followed a month later.
