China's first stamps, the Large Dragons, were issued in 1878 by the Imperial Maritime Customs post that the Irishman Robert Hart had built up, when its mail service opened to the public on 1 May that year. They carried the name CHINA in both Latin and Chinese characters and were valued in candareens; this is the red 3 candareens.
