Excavators led by Howard Carter, working for his patron the Earl of Carnarvon, found the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings in November 1922, after a systematic search that had begun in 1915. The find yielded more than 5,000 artefacts, and the gold funerary mask kept in the Egyptian Museum became the lasting symbol of the discovery. This stamp from the Gulf emirate of Sharjah reproduces the mask in its 1968 Egyptian Art series.
