New South Wales issued its first stamps on 1 January 1850, printed locally, and they showed a view of Sydney and its harbour, so collectors call them the Sydney Views. A seated figure of Industry greets arriving colonists in front of the town, with the Latin motto SIC FORTIS ETRURIA CREVIT. The 1d, 2d and 3d plates were engraved separately and repeatedly retouched, which produced dozens of varieties.
