Allegory & Mythology

The United Nations Postal Administration was inaugurated on United Nations Day, 24 October 1951, and its first stamps went on sale that same day. Under the agreement signed with the US Post Office Department that March, the stamps had to be denominated in US dollars and could be used only at UN Headquarters in New York. This 1-cent value, printed in lilac, carries the organisation's name in Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish around a group of people turning toward the UN emblem.
